Gleason’s Gym in the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, is a holdout from New York’s boxing glory days. Since its founding in 1937, Gleason’s has moved from the Bronx to Manhattan and then to Brooklyn, and many of boxing’s biggest names have trained there over the years. I photographed the aspiring boxers working out there on a Friday evening as part of a class at the International Center of Photography taught by photographer Toby Old. I have been Toby’s teaching assistant for the last several years, and Gleason’s is normally the first shoot for the class.
